Non conventional sources of energy

Non conventional sources of energy are the natural resources like solar, wind, biomass, tidal etc. These are unlimited source of energy and they are also pollution free that people can use this to produce a clean form of energy without any bad effect on the environment.

Non conventional sources of energy are also called renewable source of energy.

Non conventional sources of energy

Simply we can say that non conventional sources of energy is the source of energy which are unlimited, natural and renewable.

We all know that fossil fuels is one of the most biggest pollutant source of energy and hence the demand for non conventional source of energy is developing because it does not cause pollution and it is environmental friendly.

Non conventional sources of energy

Non conventional sourcso of energy are not only reduce the greenhouse effect but also reduce the dependence on oil and gas. The scientist are developing the technologies for the generation of energy from the natural resources like solar, wind, biomass, tidal etc. to meet the energy requirement. Non conventional sources of energy are not only non polluting but also renewable.

Types of non conventional sources of energy :-

1. Solar energy

2. Wind energy

3. Tidal energy

4. Biomass energy

5. Geothermal energy

1. Solar energy

The energy which is produced through the sunlight is called solar energy. In this process the solar photovoltaic cells are exposed to sunlight and produced in the form of electricity. The cell which converts light energy into the electricity is called photovoltic cell. Solar energy is the most abundant, inexhaustible and universal source of energy.

Non conventional sources of energy

India is a tropical country in which the sunlight is well endowed. The major part of India have bright sunlight throughout the year except in the monsoon time. The Thar desert (Rajasthan) have great tendency to produce solar energy and scientist are of the opinion that the vast expanse of the Thar desert.

Solar energy technologies use the sunlight and energy to produce heat, light, electricity etc. Solar energy is a renewable source of energy which will not become unavailable. It provide an unlimited steady supply of energy in all time. It is also a green source of energy because it does not cause any pollution during the process of production.

2. Wind energy

The energy which is produced from the wind is called wind energy. In this process the wind is used to generate electricity. The process of generating power in the area where winds are stronger and constant. This are generally located at high altitude, to produce electricity wind turbine are used.

Non conventional sources of energy

Wind energy is pollution free because no fossil fuels are used to generate electricity. India have one of the largest windmill farm in Kanyakumari in the world which generates 380 megawatt of electricity. Wind energy is harnessed by setting of windmill in an open area where wind is strong and continuous. It is used for pumping water, grinding grains and generating electricity.

In India the total wind power potential is about 20,000 megawatt. Wind energy converts the kinetic energy into the mechanical energy and later a generator converts mechanical energy into electricity. The mechanical energy can also used to a specific task such as pumping the water.

3. Tidal energy

It is a non conventional source of energy. It is the unlimited and renewable source of energy. It is used for the producing of electricity power from the tide, dams which are built close to estuaries to make use of outward and inward water current and surges.

Tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into electricity. Electricity can be generate by using tidal power in areas where the sea experience waves and tides.

Non conventional sources of energy

Now a days in India 5,000 megawatt of electricity generates from the tidal energy to meet the power requirement. The water of sea keeps on rising and falling alternatively twice a day, it is because of gravitational force of the moon and sun. This process is called Tides.

The Gulf of Kutch is the main part of tidal energy which production the energy in India. Tidal energy is not widely used but it is a non conventional source of energy so that in future the demand of tidal energy will be increased. Tides are more predictable than wind energy among all the resources of energy. The tidal energy has traditionally suffered from high cost with sufficient high tide ranges.

4. Biomass energy

It is a organic material that is comes from the plant, animal, sewage, wood etc. Firstly, this organic matter burn to produce heat energy and then generate electricity.

Non conventional sources of energy

Biomass is a very important source of energy which contribute more than 15% of the energy supply globally. Biomass is one of the most plentiful and well utilized source of energy. Crops like sugarcane and corn are also used to create by biofuel.

Here some of the example of organic material that make up biomass energy :-

Scrap lumbar

Certain crops

Manures

Forest debris

Waste residues of organic matter

Biomass is a widely utilized sources of energy because it is low cost and indigenous nature. It contribute about 15% of total energy supply, mostly used for cooking and heating.

5. Geothermal energy

Geothermal Energy is non conventional source of energy that provides energy. One of the biggest advantage that it is continuously available in the earth. The continuous flow of heat from the earth ensure an inexhaustible and limitless supply of energy. Geothermal Energy is used for cooking, space heating, electrical power generation etc.

Non conventional sources of energy

Geothermal energy is heat energy that can be get from hot rocks present in the earth’s crust that is why it is called geo (earth) thermal (heat) energy. Geothermal is the only one non conventional source of energy which is generate greenhouse gas in the earth but this emission are much lower for energy unit then the fossil fuel.

Geothermal energy involves low producing cost and it saves 80% on fossil fuels. Because of this now a days there is an increase in the use of geothermal energy.

Advantages of non conventional source of energy

Non conventional sources of energy are renewable source of energy.

It require less maintenance.

Non conventional sources of energy will be not run out.

It saves the money, generally it is low cost sources of energy.

It has number is health and environmental benefit.

It does not cause pollution in the environment.

It reduce the dependence on fossil fuel.

Lower Reliance on foreign energy sources.

It is safe, abundant and clean source of energy.

There are multiple forms of renewable energy exist on the earth.

It provides the foundation for energy independence.

Non conventional sources of energy are stable.

Conventional source of energy are eco friendly.

It leads to job creation.

Disadvantages of non conventional source of energy

Not all the form of non conventional sources of energy is commercially viable.

Some of the non conventional sources of energy are located at a specific place like wind energy is located in open area, tidal energy is located in the area of sea, dam etc.

Non conventional sources of energy required storage capabilities.

It requires a large amount of space.

Non conventional sources of energy produces less amount of energy in compare of fossil fuel.

The electricity generation capacity is not enough.

It has low efficiency level.
